Nestled in the heart of Newark, NJ, Vonda’s Kitchen is a soulful sanctuary for lovers of authentic Southern and soul food, especially when it comes to breakfast delights. This warm and welcoming eatery crafts a deliciously comforting menu that pays homage to classic Southern flavors while delivering that soulful touch locals crave. The inviting, relaxed vibe makes it a perfect spot for a casual breakfast date, a weekend treat, or a soulful dinner outing. The menu is a treasure trove of Southern and soul food favorites, bursting with vibrant tastes and rich textures that awaken the senses.

Signature breakfast dishes like the famed Whiting Fish and Grits Potatoes Eggs Any Style and fluffy Blueberry Pancakes boast a delightful harmony of flavors. Imagine perfectly cooked eggs served alongside creamy grits and crispy Texas toast smeared with sweet jelly — a plate that feels like a warm embrace on a chilly morning. The Chicken & Waffles come highly recommended by many for good reason: crispy, golden fried chicken meeting tender waffles, drizzled with syrup or hot sauce for that perfect sweet-and-savory punch. Another standout is the heavenly Oxtails over Rice & Beans, a slow-cooked extravaganza of tender meat infused with deep, soulful spices that hit all the right notes.

Seafood lovers will find plenty to savor — from the Blackened Catfish and Shrimp & Grits to the perfectly seasoned Pan Seared Salmon Cakes and delicate Baked Flounder. Each dish boasts robust, soulful flavors that showcase the kitchen’s commitment to authentic Southern cooking. And don’t overlook the sides — the Greens and Candied Yams sing with sweetness and depth, while the Cornbread Is to Die by itself is worth a visit.

If appetizers are your style, the Black Eye Pea Dip served with crisp tortilla chips and the Grilled BBQ Whole Wings with corn cakes offer an inviting start, perfect for sharing. For burger enthusiasts, the West Kinney Burgers stand out with intriguing combinations like the Mushroom Explosion, brimming with Portabella mushrooms and Swiss cheese, or the smoky, tangy BBQ Burger topped with crispy onions — all served alongside Vonda’s signature fries that are golden, crispy, and utterly addictive.

Patrons consistently praise the genuine hospitality and the soulful quality of the food. Erica “Bonnie The Poet” Wright shares how the greens, while unique with a hint of Old Bay seasoning, accompany perfectly sweet yams and delicious mac and cheese that keep drawing her back. Katie Banaag raves about the best banana walnut pancakes that make breakfast feel special, while Trevor Trinivibes highlights the excellent chicken and waffles, perfect for either a date or business meet, underscoring the spot’s versatile charm.

Even with occasional busy times that might lead to a longer wait, as Alex Bailey notes, every dish arrives bursting with fresh, satisfying flavors that make it well worth the patience. Skylin Williams appreciates the welcoming service and friendly staff that help create a comfortable dining experience, despite some minor slip-ups outside the door.

Vonda’s Kitchen is truly more than a restaurant—it’s a celebration of Southern heritage and soul food craftsmanship right in Newark. Every meal here speaks to a deep respect for flavors that warm the heart and satisfy the soul. Whether you are craving crispy fried catfish, melt-in-your-mouth oxtails, savory eggs and grits, or decadent pancakes, Vonda’s Kitchen promises a taste of genuine Southern hospitality with every bite.

Have been coming here for years! Just not so often. But every time I came, the food was smashing! Not sure how everyone cooks their greens but theirs taste as if someone used old bay and I didn’t really like it. Fried catfish was great, yams were sweet and the Mac n cheese was good

Party of 2 in the morning on a weekday. Firstly, entering the restaurant, some substance was on the ground directly outside the door, making it a bit sticky/slippery. I suspect it was oil, but the floor inside was much better. Upon entering, the host greeted us and prompted us to sit anywhere we pleased. Unfortunately, I no longer remember her name, but the host was knowledgeable and friendly throughout our experience, often checking in on us + other guests. We had the spicy chicken hash, eggs, grits, home fries, and toast for our meals. Everything was good, and I definitely would recommend the chicken hash. As we left, we bumped into another employee who asked how the meal was and if we needed anything else. After she introduced herself as Vonda, the owner. Overall, it was an enjoyable experience, and I will be returning.

My family and I went here for Sunday brunch and it was pretty good. Outside of the waiter mistaking salad dressing for oil and the brioche French toast and bananas could have been a better presentation, we had a great waiter. It was amazing and I would definitely go back and try something else.
